This contemporary dance work was created in Santander, Colombia in 2017 as part of the -Becas Bicentenario (state funding for the creation of dance).
The artistic research took place in Zapatoca and Charala, two towns of the region by two contemporary dancers from Bucaramanga, the capital of Santander. The intention of the work was to start a dialogue between dance genres and expand the scope of contemporary dance since in Colombia, in some regions of the country, this dance language can be still considered very foreign. Thus, in Zapataca the dance collective Jipijapa took part in a series of workshops that allowed both the contemporary dancers and Jipijapa members move around subjects of identity and customs. In Charala the dance collective Alma Charaleña was the one participating in the project. As a result, two site-specific dance pieces were woven together to bring Paisajes Sobrepuestos to life.
Paisajes Sobrepuestos is a dance work that asks about the plural identity that embraces Santander as a major State in Colombia, and how historical traces of the region mark our identity today. It shows how the old and the new are part of today´s cultural expression. The work was shown in public spaces in Zapatoca, Charala and Bucaramanga also proving that dance does not only belong to the theater space but it can also contribute to the artistic and cultural growth of the whole community.
